12 Hour Merdeka Millennium Endurance Race 2010 – Day 1 Practice Session

The 11th Merdeka Millennium Endurance Race (MMER) gets under way with registration, scrutineering and a practice session for all the teams involved.

Team Porsche Club Singapore, 2008 overall champion heads the early proceedings with the fastest lap at the Sepang International Circuit with their Porsche 997 RSR – piloted by Mok Weng Sun, Craig Baird and Richard Lietz.

Other Porsche entries also managed to post some fast lap times, with the likes of Kencana Racing Team and VIP Petfoods stepping up their efforts ahead of Friday’s qualifying.

Some of the favourite’s for this year’s race during the press conference. From left are drifter Charles Ng, 3-times Le Mans 24 Hour winner Marco Werner, 5-times Le Mans 24 Hour champion Frank Biela, Darryl O’ Young, Sven Herberger, Dominik Fambacher, SIC chairman Datuk Mokhzani, Tatsuya Kataoka, Farique Hairuman, Masataka Yanagida, Lotus test driver Fairuz Fauzy and Aaron Lim

Defending champion Petronas Syntium Team again fielded two BMW Z4M to defend their crown. But only one car were out on track, as they had some issues during the session, mainly due to the sole tyre supplier Pirelli’s inability to provide a good set for them.

The tyre issue were the most talked about around the pits, as rumors has it that they were tailor made for sprint race. Many teams complained that the tyre provided had a very low durability.

And with some teams only manage to put in about 6-8 laps per set, it will be a gargantuan task for them to last a 30-lap race, let alone a 12-hour endurance.

If no significant changes are made, then we might well see an upset in the making, and how many pit stop needed for this year’s race is anybody’s guess.

Stay tuned for more as RaceRevo will continue the coverage for qualifying session and Saturday’s race day.
