Asian Festival Of Speed (AFOS) – Formula BMW Pacific Race 1 & 2

Russian Daniil Kyvat of Team Eurointernational scored his first win in single-seater racing when he was victorious in Race 1 of Formula BMW Pacific at the Sepang International Circuit. Starting from pole, he was quick off the block heading into the first corner, but was challenged for the whole race by Team Eurasia’s Kotar0 Sakurai from the Philippines. Kyvat’s teammate Michael Lewis finished second while rookie James Birch of Motaworld Racing trailed behind in third in the scorching heat of Sepang.

Sakurai managed to overtake Kyvat halfway through the race, but disaster struck when he collided with another Team Eurointernational driver Carlos Sainz Jr on the final lap, relegating him to 12th position while Sainz Jr had to retire from the race. This paved the way for Kyvat to grab the chequered flag with a comfortable margin of 5.261 seconds over second place man Lewis.

Lewis also had a moment of his own when he was hit by Richard Bradley of Team Eurasia. The pair were jostling for 3rd place when Bradley try to overtake around the outside at Turn 5, but got it all wrong and his left rear tyre caught Lewis’s right rear tyre. Fortunately for Lewis his car wasn’t damaged and the American managed to continue his race. The same cannot be said about Bradley as he was left with a broken suspension and had to retire.

Calvin Wong of Petronas Mofaz Racing was the best finisher among local drivers, crossing the line in 4th position and showing good pace throughout the race. It wasn’t plain sailing for him though, as he had to hold off the challenge from Dustin Sofyan of Team Meritus for the final few laps.

After the race, Kyvat was penalized 3 grid position for the next race for changing direction multiple times to defend his position. The race official also docked Sakurai of 5 places on the grid for causing the accident with Sainz Jr.

The fastest lap of the race was set by Lewis with a time of 2:12.514 on lap 4.

Selected Driver Quotes :

Daniil Kyvat : “I’m really happy as this is my first victory in a single seater. From Thursday till today it had been really hard work. I made a good start, then on lap 3 there was pressure between me and Sakurai. I was trying to press him to the maximum and it worked as on the last lap he made a mistake.”

Race 2 of the Formula BMW Pacific saw Carlos Sainz Jr made amends from his retirement in the previous race when he chalked up his first ever Formula BMW win. It was a perfect drive from him as he drove from pole to finish in total time of 22:17.473. The victory was more sweeter as his outfit, Team Eurointernational made a clean sweep of the podium with Daniil Kyvat of Russia and Michael Lewis of the USA finished second and third respectively. It was Kyvat and Lewis second podium finishes in 2 races.

It was a close battle between the top three driver, matching each others time and pace. Kyvat and Lewis tried their best to attack Sainz Jr, but couldn’t find a way to overtake the Spaniard.

Meanwhile Kotaro Sakurai’s day got from bad to worst when he was disqualified at the end of the race for technical infringement, after his team had worked frantically to repair his car after the accident in Race 1.

Rookie Malaysian Nabil Jeffri can be pleased this time around when he achieved 5th place finish. Driving for Eurasia Motorsport, he started to show his capabilities to drive the Formula BMW after stepping up from a successful karting carrier.

Lewis again managed to set the fastest lap time of the race with 2:12.385, set on lap 7.

Selected Driver Quotes :

Carlos Sainz Jr : “In the first race I had a little bit of bad luck, so all I wanted to do was win. Maybe it was a plus in terms in of concentration and determination. Starting from pole, I was very confident. I just kept my pace and kept looking in the mirrors in the beginning. The heat was an issue for everyone, especially us, drivers from Europe and the US who aren’t used to it. But it was not enough of a problem to keep us off the podium. We know we are the fastest and so we have the self confidence.”
